Another Time Music- Multimedia Presentations in American Music History
An American Music historian, Gordon combines videos, recordings and photos in entertaining and informative presentation on major American musical figures and events. He covers a wide range of American styles with presentations on jazz figures like Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington, popular music figures like Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra, Music Theater composers like George Gershwin and Rodgers and Hammerstein, and country figures like Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and Hank Williams, Sr. In addition to American musical figures, Gordon has presentations on major classical figures like Mozart and Beethoven.
Gordon began his career as a music historian with research into Jazz in Los Angeles between 1915 and 1955. His research included interviewing a dozen musicians who played in Los Angeles during this time frame. These interviews are now part of the Digital Repository at California State University – Long Beach.
Gordon has taught at several colleges including the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater as the Visiting Lecturer in American Music History and 18 years at Marylhurst University. He began giving his presentations at area Elderhostel programs starting in 1990 and for the OASIS program starting in 1992. Currently, he has been teaching at Friendly House in Northwest Portland and at the Hollywood Senior Center. 2005 saw the start of him providing his programs senior communities around the region.
