Learn more about the Oregon Zoo, its residents and its efforts to save rare and endangered species! FOR NO CHARGE, A Zoo representative will visit your meeting place with a visual presentation and share the latest information from the zoo. We offer talks on several topics and effort will be made to include specific information that may be interesting to your group of adults.

Current topics include:

21st Century Zoo– Zoos have change rapidly in the last 50 years. Gone are the days of having one of everything in sterile artificial environments. Today’s zoos are modern facilities that provide naturalistic exhibits for our animals that are living in natural social groups. Learn how zoo professionals care for the mental and physical well-being of our animals and develop an appreciation for all creatures through our education programs.

Conservation at the Oregon Zoo– The Oregon Zoo actively participates in the conservation of species around the world. See how our zoo is supporting conservationists working in the field around the world. Closer to home the Oregon Zoo is raising species native to the Pacific Northwest to ensure they continue into the future.

“Illinois” Doug Tracy–Liberty & Union Presidential Campaign songs of the 1860 & 1864 elections

Music was a main form of campaigning used by Presidential candidates in the 1860′s. These songs give us an insight to the candidates’ positions and how divided Americans were at the time. This music was written by the people in response to the events unfolding around them and about the political characters of the day. This is the music “of the people, by the people and for the people.” Discover how music helped to shape what were, probably, the most crucial Presidential elections our nation has ever held!

“Illinois” Doug Tracy is a musician, folklorist, and troubadour. He’s part of a long tradition of entertainers who share encyclopedic collections of American songs with their audiences. As a member of the Oregon Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (OLBC) he became interested in the songs of Lincoln’s two campaigns —1860 & 1864. For the 2009 Bicentennial he developed a repertoire that represents the campaigns of Lincoln with each of his opponent’s, and featuring other political characters of the day. The melodies used were those of popular songs of the day so everyone could sing along. Some songs may seem familiar still, but many have been long forgotten. “Illinois ” Doug Tracy brings these forgotten songs back to life!

Hasya (Laughter) Yoga is a system for producing sustained laughter without relying on humor, jokes or comedy. This fun new exercise system cultivates child-like playfulness and joy. Plus, it increases the supply of oxygen to the brain and heightens body awareness. These are simple concepts that add up to a surprising amount of benefits for the mind and body.

The Willamette Heritage Center at the Mill-Salem, Oregon

The Willamette Heritage Center at the Mill in Salem preserves and shares the history of the 1834 Oregon Methodist Mission, 1843 Oregon Pioneers and the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, which produced wool products from 1889 to 1962.The Mill has been designated an American Treasure by the National Park Service! On your visit you will see preserved Mission houses, an Oregon Trail settler’s house, a historic church and the structures, equipment, and original water-powered turbine of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill with related artifacts. There’s always something new to see at the Willamette Heritage Center at the Mill! Exhibits change frequently, ranging from those locally prepared to ones that tour nationally!

Guided tours (individual and group) by pre-arrangement.

We are always looking for interested volunteers to help run the Willamette Heritage Center at the Mill, too!

Dawn Weiss, Flutist–Elegant Classical Music

Dawn Weiss, Flute Soloist, Recitalist, Speaker and Teacher (Former Principal Flutist of the Oregon Symphony from 1980-2005), performs elegant classical music with a variety of musicians. She presents Duo Concerts with either Piano, Guitar, Harp, Voice, or Flute, or Trios with oboe and piano, or two other flutes, or flute, cello and Peruvian dancer/percussionist. Concerts at your facility or event can range from strictly Classical music, to including a wider range of styles, adding lighter classics and more popular pieces!

Dawn also is a speaker on the topic of The Career of an Orchestral Musician, and is available as a coach to amateur flutists and flute ensembles. She has even published an article on “Playing and Studying the Flute After Age 39″.

The Mobile Museum of Washington County’s History Museum brings local history right to your club or association, retirement or community center, library or neighborhood group. Choose from six informative, educational and entertaining presentations on major topics of local history, all taught by experienced professional educators. Bringing a kit of artifacts from the Museum’s collection, presenters demonstrate how the objects were used and explain them in the context of the lives of the people who used them.
