Ray Brown, “A Son of Liberty”–US History Presenter

December 1st, 2011

As a retired history teacher, I give presentations on the Declaration of Independence, forming of the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights while dressed in period-correct colonial attire. In addition, I recently completed a cross-country walk from Florence, Oregon to Atlantic City to help raise an awareness for the importance of studying American history and the Constitution. This tale is a popular story of patriotism, hope, and perseverance.

Although I am based in Eugene, I travel widely!

Words of praise for Ray Brown: “We invited Mr. Brown to speak about his Walk Across America.  His presentation was polished and professional.  As a former teacher, Ray has no trouble with public speaking.  His material is interesting and entertaining with a touch of humor.  Our residents were very glad they attended and had lots of questions.  I use the Elderaudience site often to look for entertainment for our facility and I feel that Ray Brown would be an excellent fit for the site.  I recommend him highly.” Sincerely, J. Baker, Activities Director, Eugene Abbey

“The residents of Sheldon Oaks thoroughly enjoyed Ray Brown’s presentation  of his Walk Across America. Ray is an engaging speaker and had many great  visuals including the slideshow, maps, flags and costume. The presentation  tied together his passion for history, his physical & emotion journey and  the stories of the kindnesses of people he met along the way. It was an  extremely moving and interesting presentation. Immediately after, I had  residents asking when we were going to have him back to speak. We plan on  having Ray back very soon. ” Sarah C., Enrichment Coordinator, Sheldon Oaks

“Ray Brown’s talk on his Walk Across America was one of the very best presentations we have had at our senior center; I received nothing but positive comments afterwards. As part of the continuing education we try to provide to older citizens of our community, we were looking forward to meeting Ray and hearing about his experience – and we were not disappointed! Besides the visual presentation, which was awesome, it was evident that he is passionate about educating others about our country and what he discovered along his journey. What a beautiful and heart warming presentation and I highly recommend any organization to ask him to speak about this program.”  Shirley A., Lebanon Senior Center

“We recently had Ray Brown here at Willamette Oaks to share his “Walk Across America” with our residents. The program was very engaging and interesting and everyone in attendance loved it. The reviews afterward were phenomenal and some even said that Ray’s presentation was our best ever. The attention to detail in Ray’s costume, props, maps and slides added a lot to his presentation. The telling of his personal adventure as well as his goal to remind people of our great nation made for not only an entertaining story but one that left you proud to be an American. Many people talk about making changes but Ray actually went out into the world to act on it. He left all of us inspired to push ourselves further in acting on our goals and passions. ” Tara S., Willamette Oaks Retirement Community

Smooth Country Blues, with John Cannon

October 10th, 2011

WONDERFUL CLASSIC country songs, some current, and a couple originals from my own CD. Song sets will vary depending upon setting: DANCES, DINNERS, PARTIES etc.  I accompany myself on rhythm guitar and will add variations at times to the professionally pre-recorded instrumentals, which are chosen to most closely reflect the original instrumentals that made the songs hits! I use  professional top-of-the-line band equipment for the most beautiful sound, with great feel but never-punishing rhythm. I’m “un-young and un-pretty“, but I’m the real deal, riding my own horses (Jake & Gus) in the back-country where I am grateful, seeing our nation’s beautiful land! (I do invite semi-professional artist friends to join me on occasion)

I am based in the Portland/Vancouver area but will travel to Mid-Willamette Valley (travel expenses apply)

Angelica “Angel” Pilato, Author of “Angel’s Truck Stop”, a Memoir

October 6th, 2011

Angelica “Angel” Pilato is the author of “Angel’s Truck Stop: A Woman’s Love, Laughter, and Loss During the Vietnam War”, an engaging memoir recounting her time as the manager of an Air Force officers club in Thailand. Hilarious and at times, heart-wrenching, the book reveals a woman’s struggle to fit into a man’s world–The young Captain Pilato was warned her assignment was in a war zone “unfit for a woman.” After leaving active duty she joined the Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Angel earned her PhD, and held executive positions at corporations and in academia. She now resides in Lake Oswego.

Invite Angel to share stories and reflections of her time in Southeast Asia and at “Angel’s Truck Stop”. She is based in the Portland area, but will travel beyond the Portland/Vancouver area  (travel expenses apply).
