Your Activity Assistant–Janna Charlton (Certified Activities Director)

I am a Certified Activities Director, who will engage your residents with many different activities! Are you an Activities Professional in a small facility who needs an occasional part-time assistant? Or, are you in a large facility, and just need an extra set of hands for some of your larger events? I am qualified to lead groups in the whole spectrum of activities found in a traditional activity program.

I can offer activity options ranging from BINGO to full blown ARTS AND CRAFTS projects. I also offer GARDEN CLUB, COOKING GROUPS, FANCY NAILS, and several games besides BINGO.

Contact me to fill in those holes on your calendar! I am available week days and can provide services on an “as needed” basis. Although I am based in the Portland/Vancouver area, I can also travel (travel expenses will apply).

Therapeutic Horticulture is the purposeful use of plants and plant related activities to promote health and wellness for an individual or group. Programming is developed around the strengths and interests of the participants and can be offered year-round, indoors and out! Seasonal Garden Club sessions can satisfy a sense of belonging and purpose, help support orientation activities, fulfill the need to nurture life, provide an opportunity for creativity, and stimulate the mind, body and soul.

Roots Cultivation & Design, LLC is dedicated to *passionately promoting the growth of Plants & People through meaningful garden connections. *Melissa Richmond brings the plants and nature experience to your Residents, while cultivating a sense of fun and exploration! Even if your facility does not have an outdoor garden space, Melissa provides the basic materials for this unique and engaging opportunity for participants up to a total of 15. Interactive educational presentations can be arranged for larger groups.

Melissa Richmond has an AAS degree in Horticulture and finished the Horticulture Therapy Training Program with Teresia Hazen, MEd, HTR; through Legacy and PCC Gerontology. She has spent the past 7 years as the Organic Gardening Coordinator for an innovative Eldercare community. She is now providing services for several Assisted Living and Memory Care communities in the greater Portland area and teaching through the Multnomah County Library System.

Poets Get Inspired! Poetry classes with Joan Dobbie

Find your Creative Voice! My poetry has been quite widely published in anthologies including Looking for Home: Poets write about Exile, which won an American book award, and in many small press publications. My poems have won several prizes. Each year Chuck Eyers publishes something of mine as his Holiday Card. Most recently, two of my poems appeared in the anthology: LOVE AFTER SEVENTY, Wising Up Press, Decatur, Georgia. Aside from publishing student poems through my own The Unforgettables Press, I am co-editor of BEFORE WE HAVE NOWHERE TO STAND, Israel/Palestine: Poets Respond to the Struggle, a poetry anthology that strives for understanding in the Middle East. BEFORE WE HAVE NOWHERE TO STAND has been accepted for publication by Lost Horse Press, Idaho, and will come out in Spring, 2011. I have a Masters Degree in Fine Arts and many years experience presenting poetry immersion workshops. I believe you can save someone’s life with a poem they’ve never seen, contact someone in a far distant place, touch someone you knew long ago, or never met. You can meet with and commune with your own child self, experience the future, speak with your father, even after he’s died. I believe if you’re absolutely true to yourself in your writing, the path of poetry can be the path into that place where you’re no longer alone, because everyone else, in their truest place, is there too.

Watercolor Classes, Fun and Easy!–with Irilla Swanson

People enjoy the simple beauty of painting; creating something personal and meaningful. Beginning in 2001, I am still continuing to enjoy teaching in retirement communities–making great friends, as we visit, paint quietly, laugh, and visit. My classes are for beginners as well as experienced painters. We will be creating paintings and holiday cards for families and friends. Fun, relaxing, and energizing!

Drawing from my previous careers in teaching ballet and broadcast television production, I find being a visual artist very rewarding.
