**World Forestry Center’s Dicovery Museum has a cool (or should I say HOT) new exhibit coming up: A New Look at Coffee from Farm to Cup.This exhibit “tells the Hidden Stories Behind the World’s Most Popular Drink ” Every cup of coffee we buy and drink connects us with a web of hidden stories around the world. It explores the important question: What is the true story behind one of the world’s most widely traded commodities? Coffee: The World In Your Cup is a nationally touring exhibit that will open on October 17, 2009 and be on view through January 10, 2010. The exhibit provides a broad overview of the powerful influence of coffee on environments, human cultures, and economies worldwide. Highlights include: Color photographs of farms from South America to Africa to the Pacific Islands that tell the global story of coffee cultivation and trade;Three short videos featuring different aspects of the coffee industry, including a look at migratory birds in shade grown coffee regions; and interpretive displays of traditional Turkish and Ethiopian coffee sets, picking baskets, and more than 40 coffee sacks from around the world . Coffee explores the environmental and social impacts of the coffee industry and recommends ways for consumers to make socially and environmentally responsible coffee purchases at the grocery store or in a coffee shop. Learn about the impacts of caffeine, the world’s most commonly-used drug, on your body. Discover coffee’s early controversial reputation as a “revolutionary drink,” and consider the culture that surrounds coffee in the twenty-first century. In conjunction with the exhibit, the Discovery Museum will offer coffee tastings, presentations, and demonstrations on many weekends while the exhibit is on view. The museum will also host Coffee Fair, a two-day celebration of the cup-of-joe on November 7 & 8, as well as events called Museum by Moonlight on December 10, 2009 and January 7, 2010 for the over-21 crowd. The Discovery museum is located in Portland’s beautiful Washington Park and is open every day from 10am- 5pm. Admission is $7 for seniors. Learn more about The World Forestry Center and the Discovery Museum, all their exhibits and activities by checking out their listing under Museums on ElderAudience!
**Praise for Rojo the Therapy Llama! Michele, the Activities Director at Courtyard Village Senior Community wrote after Rojo’s recent visit: “The one thing I thought was funny was that before Rojo came, my residents said “Why is a llama coming? What does he do? Does he entertain?” My response was ” He is just who he is – he’s just a llama, ” and they thought I was nuts. I am corrected. Rojo is not just a llama, he is an amazing animal who melted everyone’s heart. The comment I heard the most from both facilities was “Can we keep him? “. Rojo was fabulous at Courtyard….Lori, I think you are absolutely fabulous with Rojo and people. You are so gentle and engaging. All my residents felt so welcome and comfortable around Rojo and that largely has to do with your presence. You are both a gift to all of us, Thank you so much for having the time to come.” Read more about Rojo in the Miscellaneous category on ElderAudience, and arrange for him to visit your facility or event!
