Greetings from Pam at ElderAudience! The last few days have been a bit tense as I encountered some problems with internet access, but thankfully, all are now resolved…lots to share with you. Apologies for the short notice on some of these. Let me blame the computer:)
**FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! Cedar Sinai Park in Southwest Portland announces “Grey Matters: A Brain and Aging Lecture Series” this fall, on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm, starting with 9/15′s Music to Your Brain: How Music Improves Brain Function and Aging, with Speaker Dr. Larry Sherman of OHSU; followed by 9/22′s The Healthy Aging Brain: Use it or Lose it, with Speaker Dr. Katherine Wild, Associate Professor at OHSU’s Department of Neurology; and 9/29′s Childhood Brain Development: Do Parents and Educators make a Difference?, with Speaker Courtney Stevens, PhD., Assistant Professor at Willamette University. The location for these lectures is Zidell Hall at Rose Schnitzer Manor, 6140 SW Boundary Street, in Portland.
**This must be the month for accordions–Newly listed accordionist Diane Hagen says “Bring your requests and get ready to sing,dance,and have fun!” Diane is the daughter of renowned accordion teacher Eileen Hagen. She got her start at age two and a half and was on TV by age five! From there she went on to competitions, entertaining at restaurants, recording CD’s and doing concert tours! You may have heard Diane play at the Rheinlander Restaurant. Diane will play solo or can add a sax player and drummer if desired. **NEWS FLASH! This Friday, September 11, PCC’s Senior Studies Institute (SSI) is holding a fall orientation for folks to learn about SSI and the classes it offers. SSI’s motto is “We learn from each other and we never stop learning”. SSI offers holds than 30 classes and 60 current event sessions each term, at six sites in Portland. Friday’s orientation begins at 9 am with coffee and refreshments and the meeting starts at 9:30. Newcomers are welcome to attend their first two classes for FREE! **Monica Barber has been listed on ElderAudience from the very beginning, so I’d like to take this opportunity to “sing” (pun intended:)) her praises! Monica brings her bells to your facility to create a Bell Choir and Sing-Along with guitar.The music you make together includes all the old favorite tunes together from the 30′s, 40′s, 50′s, patriotic, gospel, fabulous Broadway musicals and many more. Fun and challenging activities such as bell choir and rhythm band encourage audience participation while “Name-that-Tune” and sing along bring back great memories to reminisce by. **Another reminder that the World Forestry Center is soon hosting Doggie Palooza: “A Celebration of All Things Dog!” September 20, 2009, from 10am – 5pm . Location: 4033 SW Canyon Road, Portland. FREE with Museum Admission ($7 seniors) Well-behaved dogs welcome to the World Forestry Center for one day only! Both you and your canine companion can enjoy this fun filled day. Come browse doggie merchandise including: clothing, toys, daycares, treats, beds, and more. Get your pooch’s portrait drawn by a caricature artist, or enter him/her into the Pooch Parade and you could win prizes from local pet stores. Let your pooch sniff out new toys, try tasty treats and make new friends. Meanwhile, you can learn about Police K9 units, Therapy Animals, and Dog Blood Donors from a variety of demonstrations and presentations from dog lovers in the community.
